Top 10 items you need while solo travelling in Europe.

1. Reliable Backpack or Suitcase

  • Choose a lightweight, durable backpack or carry-on suitcase that fits your travel style. This is extremely important while solo travelling as you need your hands free to navigate airports, tickets, phones etc. I have used this back pack on all my trips since 2020 and it has been great.

2. Passport, Visas & Travel Documents

  • Keep digital and physical copies of your passport, travel insurance, accommodation bookings, and any necessary visas. Travel Essentials such as these are readily available to buy on Amazon at great value. When travelling alone or with family I found this wallet really useful for keeping passport and hotel and travel documents together.

I got this for less than €20 on Amazon

3. Credit/Debit Cards & Emergency Cash

  • Have a travel-friendly card with low foreign transaction fees, plus some local currency for emergencies. I highly recommend Revolut or Bunq. But to be honest I found that Revolut was a lot easier to set up and get organised.

4. Smartphone with Offline Maps & Translation Apps

  • Google Maps, Citymapper, and Google Translate are lifesavers when navigating new places.

5. Portable Charger & Universal Adapter

  • Ensure your phone and other devices stay charged, especially when on the move. On one of my solo travels I hadnt brought a portable charger along with me and it was such a big mistake! So many evenings on my Camino I was late walking in the evening and when phone dies we were struggling to find directions and information. I have recently bought this charger and so far its working great, also very handy to have charged up for power outages during storms as well.

6. Comfortable Walking Shoes

  • Whether exploring cities or hiking countryside trails, a good pair of shoes is a must. Again this was a lesson learned for me the hard way. If the weather is dry and warm I recommend bringing shoes you are already comfortable wearing. I have purchased both Hoka and Brooks shoes but always end up wearing my Nike Trails!

7. Lightweight Clothing & Layers

  • Pack versatile outfits suitable for different weather conditions and cultural norms.

8. Travel Insurance

  • Covers medical emergencies, lost baggage, and trip cancellations—better safe than sorry! I used World Nomad Insurance while solo travelling in Europe.

9. Reusable Water Bottle & Snacks

  • Saves money, reduces plastic waste, and keeps you hydrated during long travel days. I purchased this lead free insulated bottle and found it great, I use it during my working day as well so its an all rounder!

10. Small Security Items (Locks, Money Belt, RFID Wallet)

  • Protect valuables from pickpockets and keep essentials secure in hostels or public spaces. There are so many items on Amazon and various stores that can assist a solo traveller with security and safety. I have purchased door stoppers and wallets with pin codes etc on them. They have all worked perfectly. My next purchase will be a personal alarm that comes on a key ring,
